The Ukrainian graduated from international journalism and worked on various documentary productions in Europe before studying film in the United States.
Ukrainian-born cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on the set of the film Rust, when he was shot with a blank gun by actor Alec Baldwin.
Hutchins, 42, grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle, and worked as an investigative reporter in Europe before moving to study filmmaking in Los Angeles, the AP reported.
According to information on her website, the cinematographer spent her childhood “surrounded by reindeer and nuclear submarines.” He received a diploma in international journalism from the Kiev National University in Ukraine, to later work on British documentary productions that took her to various parts of Europe.
Additionally, he graduated from the American Film Institute and Conservatory (AFI) just 6 years ago, in 2015.
Among his credits is the crime and drama film Blindfire, and the horror tape Darlin, whose director, Polyanna MacIntosh, recognized her as “the most talented, entrenched and committed artist and teammate”.
Hutchins’ friends and colleagues took to social media to remember her.
“I am very sad to lose Halyna. And furious that this could happen on a set, ”wrote director Adam Egypt Mortimer, who worked with her on Arch enemy (2020). “She was a brilliant talent, devoted to art and cinema.”
The protagonist of that film, Joe Manganiello, tweeted that Hutchins was “an incredible talent and a great person. I can’t believe this happens in this era … Can real fire from a prop gun kill someone on the team? What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to his family ”.
McIntosh shared several photos of Hutchins during a 2019 shoot on Instagram. “We were so lucky to have her as a cinematographer on Darlin. We will miss you. You were going to keep making amazing movies. “
On your page InstagramHutchins identified herself as a tireless dreamer and adrenaline fan. In recent days I had shared moments from the filming of Rust outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Among those last images was a photo of the staff of the Rust, expressing solidarity with the members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), grouping that includes camera operators, makeup artists, sound technicians and other professionals. They were looking for a new three-year contract formula and reached a tentative agreement on October 16. (AND)
