The writer Fernando Marías, Nadal Prize in 2001, dies

The Bilbao writer Fernando Marías, winner of the Nadal Prize in 2001 for the novel ‘El niño de los coroneles’, has died at the age of 63, as reported through social networks by people close to him, among them, the writers Manuel Vilas and Espido Freire.

“My friend the writer Fernando Marías, the best of men, a heart of gold, has died,” the poet and writer Manuel Vilas, winner of the Planeta 2019 award, said on his Twitter profile.

For her part, Espido Freire, another of her friends from the literary world, has published: “Today is the day of the most intense pain: later the empty ones will arrive. Her immense talent, the warmth of her friendship, her always original vision of any topic. Crazy plans (with him nothing was impossible) interrupted”.

The Minister of Culture of the Community of Madrid, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, has also lamented the death of the writer on her personal Twitter account, where she has written: “Today I wake up with the terrible news of the death of Fernando Marías. It was the most generous man in the world. Today many people cry for him. Me too”.

Fernando Marías (Bilbao, 1958) was the author of works such as ‘The prodigious light’ or ‘The father’s island’ or ‘The world ends every day’. In addition to the Nadal Prize, the writer was awarded the National Prize for Youth Literature.
