The Guayaquil native, who is also part of the series ‘Casi 40tonas’, enters 2022 with more mature lyrics in his proposal. He will be on the Morat tour.
Being an artist, singing, being on stage is a dream that she has visualized since childhood, when she danced and sang Michael Jackson’s songs in her living room. So, it was his family that acted as the public, and applauded each of the presentations he offered in the privacy of his home, one that has known how to support and accompany him in his growth and artistic evolution.
Guayaquil Diego Chiang is a multidisciplinary artist. Not only does she sing, she also acts and it is perhaps this second profession that has allowed her to reach a massive audience. His first television role came with the telenovela If possible, from Ecuavisa, in which he gave life to a young man of humble origins, a fan of the tricolor team and shy. His charisma has moved him to other productions such as almost 40tonnes, in TC Television, in which he has taken on a more daring role. In the Rompekbezas series, his character Mateo is the partner of Brenda (Erika Vélez), an older woman and friend of her mother with whom she will maintain a clandestine relationship (and in which there is no shortage of ‘hot’ scenes between the actors).
However, music is still his first love and the vocation to which he wants to give himself completely in this 2022, the year in which he begins his solo proposal under the name of Dicapo and with the premiere of the single So many things.
This stage in his career as a soloist will also allow him to act as a guest artist in the concerts that the Colombian band Morat will offer, in Quito and Guayaquil, scheduled for March.
“I think that maybe when 2021 begins and with the experience lived with invaders, the band I’ve been in for five or six years and being part of the milieu, at least from Guayaquil, I feel that it gave me maturity and this impulse to be able to decide to pursue a solo career, because I’m a very curious person and I like it learn a lot from the different branches that you must have a notion of when you are going to have a large proposal. Because that is what I aim for with this solo career, that it be our (national) project with which I can go further”, explains the 25-year-old artist.
He adds that “before making this decision, I also have the honor of sharing or having shared so far with five people who are not only a band but also my brothers, of being able to tell them about my desire to want to pursue a solo career and have your support. The truth makes me much calmer. It was difficult in the sense that Invasores is still there, that is a project that is on pause for now and the priority is the solo career, but that is something that will never go away, we are five university friends who know that together we can make music again, it is a door that is not totally closed but as the five of us are growing, we find projects and projections for the future that each one has, plus I love carrying that Invasores flag”.
The group is made up together with him, Marcelo Hinostroza, Sebastián Salinas, David Lara and Andrés Decker.
IN SOLITARY
So many things is part of a production and composition process that began in 2021 with Jorge Take Y Jaime Velasquez. “They are two very talented producers from Guayaquil brought together by our own representative and then we began to work in January with some demos, I began to bring some song proposals, they showed theirs and so many things take almost half of the year. It has been a job of finding a balance between the three, in this team of producers and artists to find a sound and what also had me a little nervous is that I had not had this time alone in the studio and defining your own sound, Incredible things could be done with them”, explains Dicapo about this song that he co-wrote with Nehme and Velásquez.
“This is the precise song to present this proposal, because within what is to come, this first song talks about a relationship that is no longer, but there is still a flame, an existing fire, this is part of the breakup of a relationship, I think it’s super good to start with this song to tell this story that we will tell with the following singles”, he adds about the single that fuses the urban genre, with reggae and pop.
The audiovisual of So many things It was recorded in September 2021, in one location, for a whole day. “I get emotional because I find it hard to believe that I am the person who appears in that video, this phase speaks a lot about going back to my beginnings, with this type of performance, with that I grew up, how one grows alone, exploit and explore that path now, it goes with the decision of wanting to present Dicapo”, he says about the video directed by Luis Castillo.
His name and origins
Dicapo, his artistic nickname at this stage, is a name created by his older brother Eddie. “It was born from an experiment of Eddie, it seems to me that in a university class, he joins musical expressions with our names, my brothers and mine. This was in 2009 or 2010, I was still in college. Dicapo was the union of my name with the expression dacapo which means from the beginning, an indication to the score that it means from the beginning. I used it as a username on my Instagram account and after a while they began to call me by this name and it made even more sense, with the little, medium or long road traveled, I always try to go back to my beginnings to be super clear towards where do I want to go?”
That origin, he emphasizes, is part of Diego’s evolution towards the future in this profession. Belonging to a family of artists, he was on stage, along with his father, where he discovered that the adrenaline that injects him with life and allows him to create is only found and experienced when he gets on a stage and flows.
“At 9 years old, when I sang at a concert of my father at the Teatro Centro de Arte, together with my brothers too, in addition to singing and dancing, I felt at home, it smelled and tasted like home, I felt that it could be much more me, much freer and as I grew up, in adolescence this phase of singer-songwriter entered a little, of starting to write songs, but living from music was quite clear to me from a very young age and not only from living it with my family but of my perception of music, of always delivering a message as organic as possible (…) for me, my refuge and my medium has always been music, writing songs and singing them on stage, it has always been my refuge for feel much more listened to”, says Dicapo, who has been singing since he was 5 years old and did it professionally seven years ago.
More songs
Dicapo’s next release is a continuation of the story he tells in So many things. “It’s more down, is to recognize that the ‘we’ no longer exists, that’s why the next single is called Us and it’s going to come out on February 18, it has a different style, more pop, but I’m talking about the self-recognition of the end of the relationship, because the other person has already completely moved away. the other single Clouds, which will be released on March 4, talks about missing the other person, it is the person who tries to move on, but keeps thinking about the absence of the person he loves. They are quite interesting, the stories always have to do with this duality, that human beings are sensitive, but on other occasions they have a shell to protect themselves”, he maintains.
Performance
The theatrical stage is another of the spaces in which Dicapo has developed. Between 2016 and 2017, through the production company Elefante Rojo, he entered as a musical theater talent. He has been in let life sing (2018), tangles (2019), Heathers (2019) and Snow White (2021).
On television he has been part of Yes you can, Calle Amores, Together and scrambled Y almost 40tones, as well as series on digital platforms such as Pandemials. (E)
