The natural aging process is inevitable and it also affects our intimate zones. Changes occur in both the appearance and functioning of the vagina. They are completely natural and even inevitable, so be prepared for them.
Vaginal aging – how does the process work?
The vagina is made of stretchy membranes and muscles that are responsible for maintaining the efficiency, flexibility and proper hydration of the vagina. Over time, however, their structures weaken, and thus the vagina becomes shallower, narrower and much less flexible with age. This happens, inter alia, due to the loss of collagen and elastin, which after the age of 25 in our body are less and less. The pH level in the vagina also changes over time, and its low hydration makes it extremely easy for infection, pain and mechanical injuries.
In fact, the aging process of intimate parts is slightly different for each woman, depending on, among others, genetic conditions, natural births, and sexual activity. However, for most women, the aging process of the vagina becomes most noticeable during the menopause, when the level of hormones in the woman’s body drops significantly.
The effects of aging in the intimate areas
Vaginal dryness
Due to the decrease in hormones, the natural hydration of the vagina is also lost, which in turn affects the quality of a woman’s sexual life. It not only causes pain during intercourse, but is also often the cause of irritation, injuries and intimate infections.
Labia atrophy
Over time, the production of estrogens also decreases, which in turn leads to atrophy of the labia or their disappearance. Its cause is the loss of fatty bedding and the atrophy of the skin and tissues. As a result, the labia go limp, changing their shape and color at the same time. And this, in turn, often causes discomfort during intercourse and even daily activities.
Stress urinary incontinence
Estrogen deficiency and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles, in turn, cause uncontrolled leakage of urine, which occurs as a result of an increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity, i.e. when sneezing or coughing.
The aging process of the vagina is a natural process which, however, can be delayed. Its acceleration is primarily influenced by an unhygienic lifestyle – stimulants, alcohol, cigarettes, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. So to slow it down a bit, it is worth giving up stimulants, while paying more attention to the diet and regular physical activity. What’s more, the aging process of the vagina also slows down regular sexual activity. We must also not forget about the most important – regular visits to the gynecologist.
