García Márquez, who died in Mexico in 2014, has been married to Mercedes Barcha for more than five decades. The couple had two children: Rodrig and Gonzalo. They lived in Mexico City for most of their lives.

Gabriel García Márquez has a daughter who is a film producer

In the Sunday edition of the “El Universal” newspaper you could read what, incl. Hollywood Reporter that García Márquez had a daughter in the early 1990s. Her mother is Susana Cato, a writer and journalist who worked with a Colombian writer on two film scripts and also interviewed him for the magazine in 1996. Cato and García Márquez named their daughter Indira, the woman is now just over 30 years old and uses her mother’s last name.

Indira Cato is a documentary producer in Mexico City, having won several awards for her 2014 documentary about migrants passing through Mexico.

Shani García Márquez, one of the writer’s nieces, told AP that she had known about her cousin Indira for years, but had not mentioned her in the media because her parents always asked her to be discreet about her uncle’s personal life. Nobel laureate Gabriel Eligio Torres García has admitted to contacting Indira Cato via social media, although he has never met her in person. He was to learn about the existence of his uncle’s third child from his sons during one of the family reunions.

Other family members of García Márquez, quoted by El Universal, said they had not previously talked about the writer’s daughter “out of respect” for Mercedes Barch, who died in August 2020. Torres García said Indira Cato’s mother Susana was also discreet about her daughter’s origins to keep her out of media attention.

Gabriel García Márquez is the 1982 Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature for “novels and short stories in which fantasy and realism merge into a complex world of poetry, reflecting the life and conflicts of the entire continent.” His most famous works are “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and “Love in a Time of Plague”.
