In a hurry, we often reach for already sliced bread, wrapped in foil. However, according to experts, this is not a good idea. Bread packed in such a way loses its taste qualities. The foil causes rapid oxidation inside the package, as well as the collection of moisture, and thus – the taste of the bread fades, its crust becomes hard, and the center is spongy.
How to store bread? Give up foil
A much better solution is to replace the plastic bag with a paper bag, not only for environmental reasons. The open paper packaging allows air to circulate, which in turn preserves a crispy crust and a fresh, aromatic center. Paper bags also reduce the likelihood of mold growing. Bread stored in this way, however, dries much faster.
So if you want to extend its shelf life, to be able to enjoy fresh bread, e.g. at the weekend, freeze it right after you buy it. Then thaw them at room temperature and heat them in the oven.
You can also store them in a linen bag – this is a method recommended by the bakers themselves. Natural material ensures good air flow and prevents mold molding. What’s more, the bags can be prepared by yourself, e.g. from clothes that we no longer need.
