Most of us, when visiting someone in the room, instinctively take off our shoes, not wanting to dirty the floor. Sometimes, however, the host insists on not taking them off, and we feel embarrassed and do not know what to do. However, there are also situations when the host immediately asks you to remove your shoes.
Opponents of taking shoes off when visiting someone at home believe that shoes are part of their outfit. What’s more, the feet in the socks themselves do not look as stylish as in carefully selected footwear. They also claim that they keep their shoes clean, so there’s no way someone would be bothered by extra cleaning. On the other hand, people who favor taking shoes off believe that walking around the house with shoes and then around the house is unhygienic and brings dirt and germs from the street to it.
Should you remove your shoes before entering someone’s home?
Well, during all unofficial meetings, such as coffee or watching a match with friends, when entering, we should take off our shoes, unless someone asks to stay in them. In the case of informal meetings at someone’s home, it is worth remembering about choosing the right socks. Make sure they are aesthetic, clean and absolutely not leaky. So if someone comes to you for a casual meeting and doesn’t take their shoes off, and you care about it, you can always politely ask for it and it won’t be seen as a faux pas.
The situation is slightly different during official receptions or events, when the situation requires from us, for example, more elegant styling, e.g. a suit or dress, which we combine with formal footwear. At such times, the host should not require guests to remove their shoes. However, the invited people should properly take care of the cleanliness of these shoes. When organizing an official party, you should therefore take into account that the guests will remain in their shoes and in this case it is not appropriate to ask for their photo.
