- We met Carrie and the company as hit 30-year-olds from New York. The first episode of the series about their adventures was seen in 1998 and followed on the small screen until 2004, when the last episode was aired. In addition, two more cinema films were made, and now the same heroines have returned in a completely new series. “And Just Like That …” was produced by Michael Patrick King and presents the fate of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis), who after going through a complicated period life and friendship in their thirties, face the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. The production arouses great emotions from the very first episode and causes stormy discussions among viewers.
The heroines of “Sex and the City” are older than the iconic “Złotka”
The creators emphasize that they did not want to copy “, but to tell a new story. The premiere of the new series also started a discussion about how the approach to showing mature women on television has changed – the comparison is rather unfavorable, but for the new production.
“And just like that” was compared with the sitcom “The Golden Girls”, which enjoyed enormous popularity among viewers. One of the main roles in it was played by Betty White, who was called the American national good, who literally died on the last day of 2021 at the age of 99 – two weeks before her hundredth birthday.
“Złotka” was broadcast on NBC in the years 1985-1992, and the plot focused on a group of friends in mature age: divorcees and widows of various ages, who live in one house in Miami, and are accompanied by the mother of one of them, who she had to move in after the nursing home she resided in burned down.
Dorothy Zbornak (Beatrice Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan) and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) were very different from each other, had gone through various troubles in their lives and were great friends. They won the hearts of critics and viewers alike: all actresses won Emmy Awards for their roles, making “The Golden One” one of four sitcoms in history to achieve something like this. In addition, the series received two Emmy Awards for Best Comedy Series and three Golden Globes in the same category. The finale of the last series was watched by 27.7 million people, which gave “Złotkom” 17th place on the list of series with the highest viewership of the last episode.
Viewers point out how otherwise that hit series from the turn of the 1980s and 1990s showed women of mature age.
The main characters in the first season of “Złotek” are younger (May 53-54 years) than now Carrie and the rest of “Sex and the City” (54-55 years). It’s amazing how the approach to women of this age has changed.
According to viewers, the issue of the image and the choice of clothes is not the only difference. The protagonists of “Złotek” were definitely more modern and self-confident women than the friends from “And so simply”:
For an undefined reason, the women in And Just Like That are treated like old virgins deprived of their sexuality and personality by their age. And the women in “Złotka” were ravishing people who coped with realistic problems that women of this age actually have, but at the same time lived their lives to the fullest.
Seven out of ten episodes of the new “Sex and the City” were already available on HBO.
