This cinema classic, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and first released in 1972, will have a limited release in theaters on February 25.
“I’ll make him an offer he can not refuse” is the phrase that immortalized Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather. No movie changed Hollywood like this title. From Mario Puzo’s best-selling novel to box office success, his influential legacy lives on to this day.
Paramount Pictures has just released an official trailer for the 4K re-release of the film about the mythical organized crime family, in celebration of its fiftieth anniversary. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and first released in 1972, this cinematic classic will have a limited theatrical release beginning February 25, 2022, starting in US theaters and then worldwide.
The three films from the epic trilogy have been meticulously restored under Coppola’s direction, which will then be available in 4K Ultra HD (TV screen resolution) for the first time since March 22.
“I am very proud of The Godfather, undoubtedly defined the first third of my creative life”, said the director. “With this 50th anniversary tribute, I am especially proud to include The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone by Mario Puzo, as it captures Mario and my original vision by definitively concluding our epic trilogy”, mentioned the filmmaker referring to his new version of The Godfather: Part III.
“It is also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who have loved it for decades, the younger generations who still find it relevant today and those who will discover it for the first time,” said the American screenwriter, who co-wrote the libretto together with Puzo.
Starring Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning performance As the patriarch of the Corleone dynasty, the first installment in the three-film saga paints a dramatic portrait of the rise and near-fall of Clan Sicilian power in America. Balanced between the Corleone’s commitment to the family and the business of crime in which they are involved, it boasts the actions of Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, Diane Keaton Y Robert Duvall.
This masterpiece of the seventh art obtained ten Academy Award nominations, of which he won three: best film of the year, best screenplay and best leading role. It was also the center of unusual anecdotes.
The best known of all was Brando’s absence at the ceremony who acclaimed his interpretation, in protest against the mistreatment of American Indians in the entertainment industry at the time. Instead he sent Sacheen Littlefeather, Native American actress.
It is also said that Brando wanted Don Corleone to “look like a bulldog”, so she stuffed her cheeks with cotton for her audition. For the actual filming, he actually used a mouthpiece made by a dentist. This device is on display at the American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York.
