The San Francisco Ballet (USA) has announced the appointment of the Spanish Tamara Rojo as its new artistic director, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the company’s ninety years.
Rojo, until now artistic director of the English National Ballet in London, “will be in command of the oldest professional ballet company in the United States,” the San Francisco Ballet said in a statement.
Tamara Rojo, chosen after a ten-month selection process, will succeed Helgi Tomasson in late 2022, who has served as artistic director of the ballet for the last 37 years. “I am excited to join the San Francisco Ballet to contribute to the innovative spirit of the company as we re-evaluate what the future of ballet can and should look like,” said the Spaniard.
