Some people resign from buying a down one because of the fear that it is difficult to care for. Completely unnecessary! It is enough to remember a few rules to wash a down jacket without losing its properties or aesthetic appearance.
The down jacket should be washed before the winter season
Washing the down jacket once a year beforehand will be more than enough. We can do it in an automatic washing machine, bearing in mind the manufacturer’s recommendations on the label. Additionally, before throwing the jacket into the washing machine you should:
- clean the container for liquid and powder,
- check that there are no sharp parts protruding from the drum that could damage the jacket,
- clean the drum with a damp cloth,
- empty the pockets in the jacket,
- close all zippers and turn jacket inside out.
For washing, we should prepare special detergents designed for down. You should definitely avoid everyday washing products. The rinse aid can be replaced with a few drops of fragrance oil. It is best to wash the down jacket on a delicate program at a maximum of 30 degrees. The rotations should be set to 400.
A way to get crushed balls? Washing a down jacket with tennis balls
By throwing 4 clean tennis balls into the washing machine, we minimize the risk of clumping balls, which are a common nightmare when washing down jackets. They break down the natural down and wash in a manner that is safe for the material.
Drying a down jacket in two ways
If your jacket has lost its volume right after washing, do not worry. If we dry it properly, the jacket will easily return to its previous form. We can do it using an automatic dryer by selecting a delicate program up to a maximum of 60 degrees. Higher temperatures may burn the feathers. The second way is to gently press the jacket and lay it flat, away from any heat sources. However, you have to break the fluff with your hands from time to time by shaking it and delicately.
