Invasive rooms tempt with an interesting appearance or smell, but their presence can be extremely harmful. The best example is a rosette pistia, also known as water lettuce and a floating pistia. It comes from the tropical zone and you can often see it in warm waters, often as a burdensome weed. In Poland, its cultivation has been prohibited from August 2, 2024.
What does a rosette pistia look like? Resembles a floating lettuce
Pistia is a slow floating rosette with focused, pale green leaves. It stays on the surface thanks to dense hair. It reproduces very quickly and as a result can cover the surface of the entire tank. Unfortunately, it limits light access to other aquatic organisms and reduces the level of oxygen in.
Water lettuce was once popular as a decoration of ponds and aquariums. However, fans of this plant must accept the fact that its sale, transport and detention are strictly prohibited. If you do not have a permit, you are in danger of arrest, deprivation of liberty up to five years, and a fine of PLN 1 million.
The rosette pistia is forbidden. The penalty may hurt the wallet
To legally cultivate a rosette, a special permit is needed from the General Director of Environmental Protection. The plant has its fans, but for example in the United States persistently fight with it. They use mechanical (collection and removal from the surface), chemical and biological methods (using feeding insects). If this flower captivated you and you would like to introduce something similar to the garden, be interested in these three specimens: floating frog, spongy limnobium and floating salvinia.
