A statistical Pole watched TV in 2020 on average four hours and 21 minutes a day. It is true that we do not yet know what these estimates look like in the case of 2021, but we do know which series attracted the greatest interest of Polish users of the Google search engine, who needed information about what is best to watch. The results show that although Poles follow the world’s novelties and trends as much as possible, they also remember about domestic productions.
List of the 10 most searched series in Poland in 2021
When you look at the most frequently searched series titles in the past year, you get the impression that Poles watch or use almost exclusively. Eight out of ten items (including the first eight) can be viewed on this platform. Apart from them, the new series “Brzyduli” from TVN and the comedy series “Kowalscy vs Kowalski” by Polsat also made it to the top, which took 9th and 10th position on the list, respectively.
This does not mean, however, that these are the only Polish series in the list. In fifth place was the Polish comedy production of Netflix, i.e. a morally brave series about girls who invented an application that makes it easier for women to climax. The seventh place was taken by Jan Holoubek’s “Rojst”, whose new season also debuted this year. Once again Dawid Ogrodnik, Andrzej Seweryn and Zofia Wichłacz appeared in it, and they were joined by, among others Magdalena Różdżka, Anna Dereszowska and Piotr Trojan.
Apart from Polish accents, it is worth noting that the list corresponds to the most popular on a global scale. The list is opened by a loud Korean series that unquestionably broke all Netflix records and became a global sensation. It is a story about a group of low-income people who agree to play a game for big money: the rules seem simple at first, they are just meant to play popular children’s games. The problem is that whoever loses dies.
The costume series based on the best-selling book was in second place. The action was set in nineteenth-century England, and the story, of course, is about social scandals, looking for the perfect partner and love: the production after its premiere became the most popular series in the history of Netflix (it was only outclassed by “Squid Game”).
We admit that we were a bit surprised by the third place netflix series “Ginny & Georgie”. The main character is Ginny Miller, a pensive and nervous fifteen-year-old girl. She is unlucky enough to feel more mature than her thirty-year-old mother – the sexy and dynamic Georgia Miller. After years of constant running away, mother and daughter end up in picturesque New England. Georgia wants to finally put down roots here and provide her family with something very unusual for her – a normal life. It’s going great at first, but Georgia’s past is threatening this new life and a combo-sweet social idyll. This time, however, instead of running away, the woman decides to fight back.
At one time, the fourth-placed French crime series with Omar Sy in the lead role was the most popular series in Netflix history – until “Squid Game” appeared. Here, the plot is not about the world’s most famous gentleman thief, but rather about a young man who is inspired by him when he wants to avenge his father. He was convicted of theft that he did not commit, and even worse, he died in prison before the charges could be cleared. It is also worth noting that the popularity of the series had a positive impact on readership: viewers then turned to books about Arsen Lupine and made them appear on the bestseller lists.
Sixth place went to the medical series, which focuses on the character of Dr. Mac Goodwin. He is appointed the new medical director of the eponymous hospital, New Amsterdam, which is the oldest of its kind in the USA. He is doing everything he can to save an underfunded and underrated facility: he wants to restore it to its former glory. The production can be watched not only on Netflix, it was also broadcast by Fox Polska and Stopklatka.
Immediately after the Polish “Rojście” was the international hit, that is the series “” awarded with the Golden Globe with Anya Taylor Joy in the lead role. It is a story of a young girl who is orphaned very early and ends up in an orphanage. This is where he learns to play chess from the janitor – it quickly turns out that he has extraordinary talent in this field. Luck wants the facility to stuff its charges with psychotropic drugs, which Beth quickly becomes addicted to. Over the years, her talent and addiction develop: the girl wanders to the world chess championship. Its most dangerous opponent is the Russian chess master, played by Marcin Dorociński.
