The problem of depopulation of cities and smaller locations has long worried experts and local authorities. This also applies to Dêbica, who has been losing the inhabitants from year to year from year to year. However, not everyone will go out forever.

Dębica was on the list of 139 average cities losing socio-economic functions developed by the State Academy of Sciences. The most important problems were indicated, among others deteriorating forecasts regarding the number, growing unemployment and falling numbers of registered companies. Dębica was qualified as “a city of decreasing potential”i.e. with a strongly growing unfavorable distance and moderately poor socio-economic situation.

Depopulating cities in Poland. Not everyone leaves Dębica permanently

The inhabitants of Dębica are decreasing from year to year. As the portal Ziemadebicka.pl alarmed, 2023 was the worst in 24 years. At that time, 42,188 people were registered for the stay. In 2024, according to CSO data, it was already 42,986 people. This is a small growth, but recent years show a rather disturbing downward trend.

Over 24 years, over 7,000 inhabitants were lost to the city

– we read. For many years young people go to study or to work and do not decide to return, but they still remain registered in the family home. The actual situation can therefore be much worse than the official numbers indicate. – I went to college from Dębica and did not come back. I currently live in Warsaw and I think I will stay here […] In a small city you get soul – admits one of the former residents in an interview with Podroze.onet.pl. – I am overwhelmed by the mentality – adds another interlocutor, who also went to Warsaw and did not return.

Some, however, decide to return and do not regret it at all. A flat in a smaller town away from big cities has many advantages. Calm, lack of traffic jams and cheaper real estate are most often emphasized, which often goes with lower medium earnings “on site”. – I value peace, so it’s a perfect place for me – notes the interlocutor Onet. He also emphasizes that the lack of attractions typical of larger cities is not a problem, because it is not so far from Dębica to Rzeszów or Krakow.

What is worth seeing in Dębica? Not only industry

Cities also attract. The history of Dębica dates back to the 13th century, but the city’s location was only carried out on June 10, 1372. Over the next century, many ups and downs experienced, it was also a victim of war conflicts many times, including During the war with Sweden. After World War I, Dębica was within the Central Industrial District and is still famous for today for industry and factories. Tourists can learn about the history of the city and the surrounding area, including thanks to the route of the Central Industrial District.
