The portrait of Dr. Boucard dated 1928 presents a handsome man with a vial and a microscope in his hands. The painting has been in a private collection for over 40 years. Now he will go to the London auction, where March 5 will be sold to the new buyer. Sellers estimate that the auction will reach up to PLN 40 million – and maybe it will be even more.
The portrait of Tamara Łempicka will go to the London auction
Christie’s auction house obtained at the March Auction London Evening Sale – 20th/21st Century Picture of Tamara Łempicka. The works of Polish painter rarely go on sale, and are also valued by private collectors. The portrait of Dr. Boucard is all the more attractive because the last four decades he stayed in private hands and can now be a supplement to his own collection – Łempicka also painted a well -known portrait of the scientist’s wife and portraits of their daughter.
Łempicka met Boucard and his family in 1927. A valued scientist studied the human digestive system – we owe him the discovery of lactic acid bacteria, which allowed him to create a probiotic that helps during diarrhea and stomach problems. Boucard had considerable money for those times. He was happy to invest in works of art – Private acquaintance with Tamara Łempicka translated into regular support of her work. The painter painted portraits of his family, but she was also a friend, e.g. taken to a private yacht. Thanks to his funds, the Polish woman organized parties and social meetings in France.
Łempicka decided to portray it with accessories he used in his scientific work. The scientist’s cote stylized the male coat fashionable in the 1920s, in her hands placed attributes in the field that Boucard had dealt with for years. The price that the London auction house intends to achieve for her work is to amount to up to 8 million pounds – If he reaches this sum, it will be the most expensive image of Łempicka, the subject of which is a man.
We don’t often have men painted by women – encourages Giovanna Bertazzoni, chairwoman of the Christie’s auction house in an interview with Artnet.com.
