How big is the station in Antwerp? Architectural gem that is breathtaking

Antwerp, one of the most important ports of Europe, at the end of the 19th century needed a railway station that would match its importance. The city authorities entrusted this task to Louis Delacenserie, an architect specializing in the renovation of Gothic monuments of Bruges. His design combined various styles, from the Renaissance to Baroque, enriched with neoclassical columns and a dome inspired by the Roman pantheon. After ten years of construction, in 1905, it was created about a facade resembling a monumental palace.

The interior is the most impressive – full of light, marble decorations and gilded details. The platform hall, designed by Clément Van Bogert, impresses with a momentum. It is 185 meters long and 44 meters high, and its glass roof adds lightness. Although during World War II the building suffered serious damage, careful renovation restored its former splendor. Today, he impresses even more, because since 2020 at night it is illuminated by intelligent, energy -saving lighting, which subtly extracts architectural details.
