The first season of X-Men ’97, a series that continued the story of the 90s animated classic, was a huge success and fans are already eagerly awaiting new batches of episodes. However, the Disney+ fiction suffered a hard setback even before its premiere, with the dismissal of its creator, Beau DeMayo. Now, The showrunner and screenwriter has denounced that the credits of the second installment have been removed (which I had already written) due to a post about gay pride and Marvel has responded, offering a very different explanation.

“First and foremost, I am so grateful to have worked on X-Men ’97, collaborating with some incredibly talented people. Creating this reboot was a dream come true and the support that fans have shown is heartwarming. However, I felt it was urgent that I speak out after leaving the series…” DeMayo wrote on social media last Thursday, alongside a screenshot of an old post. The post depicted the creator dressed as a Scantily clad cyclops and the caption read: “Happy Pride!”

“Above is the X-Men fan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13th, Marvel sent me a letter notifying me that they had removed my credits. from season two due to publication. Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I experienced while working on X-Men ’97 and Blade,” DeMayo explained.

For its part, Marvel has issued a statement alluding to the reasons behind the showrunner’s dismissal, noting that this “He was fired in March 2024 following an internal investigation”. “Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel,” the company said. Although The House of Ideas has not delved into the nature of the findings, a source familiar with the investigation has pointed to sexual misconduct, according to Variety.

“The truth will be revealed. After his disaster with Disney Plus, Marvel wants to deceive with alleged breaches of contract through tweets“It’s tragic that it’s come to this, but nothing surprising. Stay tuned,” DeMayo wrote again on social media, in response to Marvel’s statement.

Before his sudden dismissal, DeMayo had prepared the script for the second season of X-Men’ 97for which he ultimately will not receive credit. On the other hand, the third installment of the fiction has already found a new scriptwriter. It is worth mentioning that DeMayo was a regular collaborator at Marvel Studios. Previously, he had written the script for an episode of the Moon Knight series, as well as the first drafts of the new adaptation of Blade, the long-awaited return of the vampire hunter starring Mahershala Ali.
