After this interview he disappeared from the airwaves, today he avoids the media. What’s up with Piotr Gembarowski?

In the late 90s Piotr Gembarowski was considered one of the most promising journalists of the young generation. He was the face of “Teleexpress” and TVP breakfast shows: “Kawy czy herbata?” and “Pytania na ńdania”. He also hosted “Gość Jedynki”, where he talked to politicians from various groups. It was one of these interviews that led to Gembarowski’s career hanging by a thread, and he himself soon moved into the shadows.

In 2000, a conversation between Piotr Gembarowski and presidential candidate Marian Krzaklewski was widely reported in the media. The atmosphere in the studio could be cut with a knife, and the interview itself ended with the journalist being suspended for another three months.

Piotr Gembarowski was the face of Polish Television. Today he stays away from the media

In the book “Where Are the Stars from Those Years?” he explained his behavior by the difficult cooperation with his guest. “My interviewee was the last of the candidates I talked to. All the previous ones, including the very unruly ones, adjusted to the rules of the program, i.e. they answered the questions that were asked, not the ones that were not. Marian Krzaklewski tried to force things prepared for him by the campaign team, ignoring my questions,” reported Gembarowski, who was accused of being too offensive towards his interviewee after the interview. The host of “Gość Jedynka” often interrupted Krzaklewski, and at times even raised his tone at him. In “Where Are the Stars from Those Years?” he recalled: “I let myself be provoked and my emotions carried me away. My motivation was fine, because I did not want it to be unfair to my previous interviewees.”

After three months of suspension, the journalist returned to work at Telewizja Polska. He hosted programs for the public broadcaster for the next three years. In 2004, he parted ways with the station for good, founded a company organizing media training and continued his journalistic career at Antyradio and Superstacja. At the latter broadcaster, he hosted his own format “Debata Piotra Gembarowskiego” for almost five years, in which he interviewed politicians.

In 2020, he briefly joined the online channel Comparic24.TV: “My work at the Comparic24.TV editorial office was seasonal, lasting eight months, until the end of 2020. It was a matter resulting from the pandemic,” the journalist explained in an interview with Plejada. In 2021, Gembarowski joined the cast of “Colors of Happiness”, where he played one of the Polish journalists who reported on the rescue operation in Sicily.

After many years of work, the former host of “Teleexpress” decided to step back: “I now live a life away from the media, I am no longer interested in life in the spotlight and in front of cameras. I have definitely and permanently parted ways with cameras, I no longer appear in front of any cameras, apart from my own, in front of which I present my trainees during training. I enjoy my privacy and normality,” he said in an interview with Plejada published in 2023. Below we recall our conversation with Piotr Gembarowski.
