Titles by Ozon, Costa-Gavras, Leigh and Alberdi, among others, complete the Official Section of Zinemaldia
The Zinemaldia has presented the international films that will compete in the Official Sectionwhere directors who are regulars at the San Sebastian Film Festival meet again and other films are released, such as Laura Carrera and Xin Huo.
Maite Alberdi, Edward Berger, Gia Coppola, Costa-Gavras, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Mike Leigh, Diego Lerman, Joshua Oppenheimer and François Ozon They will compete alongside newcomers Laura Carreira and Xin Huo, as well as Audrey Diwan, who will direct the opening film, Iciar Bollain, Pedro Martin-Calero, Pilar Palomero and Albert Serrawho direct titles with Spanish production.
The eleven new names announced thus complete the official line-up for the Zinemaldia, which will be held from 20 to 28 September.
Chilean Maite Alberdi will participate for the first time in the race for the Golden Shell with her first fiction film, The place of the otheradaptation of one of the cases collected in the essay by Alia Trabucco Zerán, The murderers. It is the true story of the writer María Carolina Geel, who shot her lover to death in 1955. Alberdi has already visited San Sebastián in Perlak with non-fiction works such as The Mole Agent and The infinite memory.
The Portuguese Laura Carrera will bring her first feature film to San Sebastian, On Fallingabout the precarious life of a Portuguese worker in a huge warehouse in Scotland.
American Gia Coppola will premiere the fiction The Last Showgirlstarring Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dave Bautista, about a veteran dancer.
The French-Greek director Costa-Gavras returns to the Official Section with The last souffléwhich brings together the life reflections of a palliative care doctor and a writer. The director already competed for the Golden Shell in 2012 with The capital.
Edward Berger will compete with Conclavestarring Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal who oversees a conclave to elect a new Pope following his sudden death.
Xin Huo will bring his debut behind the camera to Donostia: Bound in HeavenThe Chinese filmmaker has previously been a screenwriter on films such as The Monkey King either Curiosity Kills The CatThis time it tells the story of a terminally ill man and a young woman trapped by violence.
Japanese Kiyoshi Kurosawa will compete for the Golden Shell with Hevi no michi (Serpent’s Path)about a man’s plan to avenge the brutal death of his daughter. It is a remake, shot in French, of his 1998 film.
Mike Leigh will bring, after his time at Perlak, Hard Truthsstarring Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin, which portrays the daily life of a London family. The British director has always been present at the Zinemaldia with films that have premiered at other festivals.
Argentine Diego Lerman returns to San Sebastian for the third time with The man who loved flying saucersabout the most remembered audiovisual creation of alien presence on television in his country. The film features Renata Lerman, winner of the Silver Shell for best supporting performance in Alternate.
In the Official Section there will also be Joshua Oppenheimer with The Endhis first foray into fiction cinema. It is a dystopian musical about a wealthy family surviving in a bunker two decades after the end of the world.
Another director beloved by the festival, François Ozon, returns with When the autumn comesThe French director’s new film tells the story of a retired woman whose life changes when she meets a man who has just been released from prison. This is Ozon’s sixth participation in the Official Section.
In addition, Audrey Diwan will open the festival with a film in competition, Emmanuelleand Iciar Bollain will also be there (I am Nevenka), Pedro Martin-Calero (Crying), Pilar Palomero (The flashes) and Albert Serra (Afternoons of solitude).
