In July 2005, Patryk Vega’s “PitBull” hit the cinema screens. The film received two awards and eleven nominations, including two for the Eagles and one for the Golden Lions. The main roles in the production about policemen from the Warsaw Homicide Department were played by Marcin Dorociński, Janusz Gajos, Rafał Mohr and Andrzej Grabowski. The last of the actors appeared at the screening of “PitBull” organized as part of the Łódź initiative TME Polówka, the so-called open-air cinema.
Andrzej Grabowski on the role in “PitBull”. He was rejected the first time
During the conversation, Andrzej Grabowski mentioned, among other things, that he was rejected by the film’s producers the first time because it was too closely associated with the role of Ferdynand Kiepski.
“I was happy, not only because it was a new role, but because at that time I was really into the series ‘Świat według Kiepskich’ as Ferdek, and here I suddenly had a completely different role. Of course I agreed… after a month he called and said: ‘Unfortunately Andrzej, but the producer didn’t agree to hire you because you have Ferdek’s face'” – recalled Andrzej Grabowski during a meeting in Łódź. The actor also added that the creators of “PitBull” initially planned to cast someone completely different in the role of Goebbels. However, work on the production was suspended for some time. The project started again, but only after a dozen or so months.
“After two years he called me [przyp. red. Patryk Vega] and he asked if I would play this Goebbels and if I would not be offended. Of course I was not offended. Then the thinking began, what to do. I, with the face of Ferdek Kiepski, have to play someone completely different… Obviously, I have to change mentally… The easiest way to change is to shave myself bald, shave my mustache, and I did it the day before the first shots. When I looked in the mirror, I knew who I would like to play,” the actor explained.
