The screening of “Green Border”, which won awards at the Venice International Film Festival, is scheduled for July 26. This is one of the free night screenings organized as part of New Horizons and starting at 10 p.m.
What did Dworczyk write? In his opinion, the show “will deepen the divisions in society”
“I turn to you with an urgent request to immediately suspend the screening of the film ‘Green Border’. (…) In the face of the events on the Polish-Belarusian border and out of respect for the Polish uniform, I believe that screening this film is socially harmful and will deepen the divisions in society,” writes Dworczyk in his letter. He also adds:
I urge you to intervene quickly and effectively so that content that serves to disinform society is not publicly promoted. We cannot allow our uniformed services: the Border Guard, the Polish Army or the Police to be slandered. We cannot allow the good name of the Polish uniform to be disgraced.
He posted the content of the “request” on the X website, and addressed it to the director of the Nowe Horyzonty cinema, Daniel Ratuszniak. He also noted that he was also sending the letter to the mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, the governor of Lower Silesia, Maciej Awiżeń, and the marshal of the province, Paweł Gancarz.
The “green border” has not been liked by right-wing politicians from the beginning
This is yet another time when politicians from Law and Justice or Confederation have accused “Green Border” of similar things. The lawsuit was filed by Robert Bąkiewicz, who wanted a ban on showing the film in cinemas at all or , President Andrzej Duda compared the production to Nazi propaganda, although he had not seen the film, and Zbigniew Ziobro also attacked the director. The latter finally got it.
Meanwhile, the production was appreciated not only by the Venice jury, but also found itself, for example, in “The Hollywood Reporter”. This year it was qualified for the main competition of the Gdynia Film Festival. Agnieszka Holland’s film also won , which is the only film event created at the initiative of Pope John Paul II.
“Green Border” was one of the most watched cinema premieres of last year, then it enjoyed popularity on streaming services. Many people disagree with the opinion of some politicians, saying that. – Let me be clear, because they accuse me of being anti-Polish and that it is an anti-Polish film. No. I love Poland and I do not want Poland on this border – and in one of the interviews. – I do not want Polish soldiers or border guards to be forced by their superiors or the authorities to break the law and use cruelty. I do not want that – she added.
