Cucumbers from your own garden are a true taste of summer. We can eat them basically straight after picking, and they often end up in summer pickles or in the form of lightly salted cucumbers. However, they do not always look like those from the shops. They are crooked, thinner on one side, bulging. Why?
Due to these mistakes, cucumbers are malnourished and grow crookedly.
It seems that growing cucumbers is not particularly complicated. We only need to keep an eye on the sowing and transplanting dates, take care of the right location and soil, and ensure regular watering and fertilization. However, even these seemingly simple activities can be performed incorrectly. What’s more, the cucumbers themselves will sing all this to us. It turns out that their shape can tell us a lot about the mistakes we made during care.
- Shape resembling a pear indicates a potassium deficiency.
- Bulges at the ends, creating “wasp waist” are caused by watering with water that is too cold. Cucumbers and all other crops should be watered with water at room temperature.
- Bent, hooked shape says that the cucumbers were insufficiently watered.
- Very narrow, as if dried tip indicates too little nitrogen.

How to fertilize cucumbers?
It is worth remembering to fertilize cucumbers regularly. They quickly use the nutrients contained in the soil, so it is a good idea to enrich it from time to time. Some people use products that can be purchased in gardening stores for this purpose. Banana peel fertilizer, liquid manure, and yeast fertilizer are also perfect, as they help absorb nutrients from the soil and protect against diseases. If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
