The singer had been struggling with health issues for many years, which ultimately forced him to retire from the music industry. John Mayall – stage career

John Mayall was born on November 29, 1933, in Macclesfield, Cheshire, south of Manchester. In his youth, he was inspired by American bluesmen such as Leadbelly, Albert Ammons, and Pinetop Smith. After completing his military service in Korea in 1956, he began playing blues in a semi-professional group, The Powerhouse Four, and then The Blues Syndicate.

After moving to London, he formed the Bluesbreakers, which opened the door to a global career for many artists. The band, considered a ‘breeding ground for talent’, featured Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor and Jon Hiseman. The musician himself denied, however, that he was a talent scout. In interviews, he emphasised that he created and played for the love of music and shared this approach with his younger colleagues. In 2005, Mayall received the prestigious Order of the British Empire for his services to music.
