Many rules that have been in place in work environments for years are incomprehensible to Generation Z. Young people who are entering the market are trying to redefine the current customs of corporations and change the behavior of their bosses. They point out their mistakes without hesitation. Recently, the use of the thumbs-up emoticon has been a subject of discussion. It turns out that it can be perceived as passive-aggressive.
Controversial emoticon in the workplace
By definition, the ‘Thumbs up emoji’ is an emoticon that is meant to be a universal sign of acceptance, agreement, or praise. Many people consider it to be an expression of approval, support, encouragement, or confirmation of receipt of a message. It has been used for years in both private and professional conversations and has not caused any concern so far. It was only Generation Z who noticed something passive-aggressive in the use of the thumbs up by employers.

As described by Business Insider, the source of the discussion is the Reddit portal. It was there that young people confessed that in today’s times it is a better solution to use a heart emoticon or simply a word of appreciation. Messages such as “great”, “good”, “thanks” reach them much more than a simple thumbs up symbol. As the portal indicates, the argument over an innocent symbol is a significant expression of the difference between generations.
“That’s very rude”
The young ones explained their point of view. “For younger people (I’m 24), the thumbs up emoji is used to be really passive aggressive,” they wrote. “It’s really rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up,” they wrote. On the other hand, people from other generations found the heart emoji more disturbing.
