Detective John Kelly, Lieutenant Horatio Caine, crime, police, mafia, crime, honor and murder movies… This is basically how the career of character actor David Caruso looked from the beginning. He quietly retired with the end of the beloved series “CSI: Miami”, but he still “lives” in pop culture as a hero of memes.
David Caruso. Difficult beginnings of a career
David Caruso always dreamed of big movie roles. In the first years of his career, however, he got stuck in supporting roles of policemen, shady characters and people who were completely insignificant. At the same time, he played episodic roles in series. It was not until 1993 that he landed on the set of “NYPD Blue” and felt that this could be a breakthrough for him. The series about New York police officers enjoyed considerable viewership, and Caruso was given the main role in it. He did not last long in the series regime – he left suddenly after the second season, hoping that now the doors of film would be open to him – after all, the Golden Globe he received, as well as the Emmy nomination, had to prove something.
It didn’t happen. Although the roles came quite quickly, he was “rewarded” with nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards for “Kiss of Death” and the erotic “Jade”. Caruso had to return from the cinema to television. He was already over 40 years old and had one breakthrough role under his belt, which he himself turned down. He got the second one in 2002.
What’s up with David Caruso, Lt. Horatio Caine from “CSI: Miami”?
In the series “CSI” he was entrusted with a unit in hot Miami. Caruso specialized in long stares, sharp, one-sentence comebacks and a cool demeanor, which at one point in the series was explained by his character’s Asperger’s. With the spread of the Internet, he also became a star of memes. His lieutenant Horatio Caine, putting on dark glasses, summed up political events in the world, and more one-sentence punch lines were invented for increasingly absurd crime puzzles.
David Caruso retired from acting when CSI: Miami ended. The series was canceled in 2012 when its costs began to skyrocket and, in an era of much bigger TV shows at the time, its revenues began to dwindle. Caruso retired, but although he no longer appears in front of the camera, he is happy to support the efforts of others through his production company. You can also visit his clothing store in Miami.
The retired actor rarely appears in public. Recent years have changed him beyond recognition – it is difficult to recognize Lieutenant Horatio Caine in him.
