Clematis wilt is a devastating disease that causes clematis vines to shrivel and die, usually in early summer when the plants are just beginning to show vigorous growth. There is no chemical cure for clematis wilt, but there are some things you can do to help the plant survive.
Wilt prevention

Large-flowered clematis hybrids often suffer from clematis wilt. This fungal disease kills the entire plant above ground. Apart from choosing the right site and preparing the soil well, the only preventative measure is to check the plant regularly, especially during the summer months. Infected plants should be cut back to the ground immediately – they usually grow back when planted deep enough

The right fertilizer
Clematis – there are many varieties, the most beautiful are large-flowered. They grow and bloom better when pruned in spring. They like fertile, constantly moist soil. They grow well in places sheltered from the wind, in sun or partial shade. Photo: PAWEL SLOMCZYNSKI / Agencja Wyborcza.pl
When it comes to fertilization, the vine generally copes well with low nutrient levels. In nature, it relies on what is released by microorganisms in autumn leaves and other decaying plant matter. Therefore, it is quite sufficient to provide clematis with two to three litres of mature compost in spring. Most wild species have a slightly higher lime requirement: a handful of garden lime or algae lime on the roots every other winter is sufficient.
Be careful when preparing the soil
Like many woodland plants, clematis have a delicate, shallow network of roots. Therefore, you should refrain from any interference with the soil around the rooting site of the plants. Regularly hand-pull any weeds: a layer of pine bark mulch is a helpful preventative measure. Avoid damaging thin shoots as this increases the risk of infection.
