Fans ask why Jamel Debbouze carried the Olympic flame with his hand in his pocket. A sad story

Jamel Debbouze is a French actor well known to Polish viewers, for example for his role in the film “Asterix and Obelix. Mission Cleopatra”. Now he had the opportunity to carry the torch with the Olympic flame, in connection with the Olympic Games organized in Paris. Some wonder why he had his hand in his pocket.

It is by no means a sign of disrespect or a show of nonchalance. In 1990, Jamel Debbouze suffered a serious accident. Since then, one of his trademarks has been a hand always in his pocket or – as in the 2002 film “Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra” – hidden under his toga.

Numerabis from Mission Cleopatra survived a serious accident as a teenager

Jamel Debbouze played the Egyptian Numerabis in a film about strong Gauls that has been very popular in our country for years. He is a comedian, actor, but also a screenwriter and film producer. Even before we got to know him as Numerabis, the famous film “Amelia” premiered, in which he also starred. He made his debut as a 17-year-old, before the accident, but he gained momentum after he lost the use of his right arm.

The accident occurred in January 1990. While crossing the tracks at the SNCF station in Trappes, Debbouze was hit by a Paris-Nantes train travelling at 150 km/h. With him was a boy his age, Jean-Paul Admette (son of the singer of Reunion Michel Admette). Unfortunately, he did not survive.

After the accident, Michel Admette and his wife brought legal proceedings against Debbouze – who was 14 at the time of the incident – for manslaughter. The case was dismissed.

Jamel Debbouze got into film through improvisation

The teenager, who was born to Moroccan immigrants as the oldest of six siblings, became very interested in theatrical improvisation after an accident. He made his debut in the theater in 1991 and reached the final of the French Junior Championship of the French Improvisation League. In July 1992, he participated in an international meeting on experimental improvisation in Montreal, Quebec. He performed twice, in 1992 and 1993, for the President of the Republic, François Mitterrand. On July 1, 1993, he appeared on television for the first time, and the year before, he made his screen debut in a short film.

As for his family life, in January 2007, the actor met journalist Mélissa Theuriau during a film festival. They married on May 7, 2008. They have a son, Léon Ali Debbouze, born on December 3, 2008, and a daughter, Lila Fatima Brigitte Debbouze, born on September 28, 2011.
