When to prune lavender? Two simple tricks will make your garden covered with a “carpet of flowers”

Lavender is very popular in our country and decorates many gardens. How can we make it bloom longer and spread a wonderful scent in our garden throughout the summer season? Two things are the key to success here.

Lavender is the undisputed symbol of French Provence. In addition to its well-known scent, it is also exceptionally decorative, especially when its beautiful, small, purple flowers grow densely and cover the expanses of our gardens. The properties of lavender are hard to count on the fingers of one hand. This plant is not only characterized by a beautiful scent, which also repels mosquitoes, but also has a wide application in cosmetics, the pharmaceutical industry, and even in gastronomy.

How to prune lavender? Remember this and it will be a pleasure to the eyes for longer

How to make lavender bloom in our garden for as long as possible? We need to focus on two particularly important care treatments: proper pruning and fertilization. Lavender should be cut in spring and summer, after the flowering period. It is best to do it from July to the end of August, but the best time is undoubtedly July.

Trimming lavender encourages the plant to bloom again the same year. It is worth remembering to prune lavender right after flowering. If we do it too late, we can cause the plant to not survive the winter period too well. How to prune lavender? The technique is also very important here. Both with spring and summer pruning, all shoots should be shortened by no more than about 1/3 of their length. Remember that we only prune those shoots that have leaves and are not woody!

TIP! Thanks to the combination of these two treatments – appropriate pruning and fertilization – lavender can please our eyes and nose even until October. It is worth remembering, however, to get rid of the fading inflorescences after the flowering period.

How to make lavender fertilizer?

In the case of lavender, an alkaline soil rich in calcium will work perfectly – that’s why a natural, ecological, homemade eggshell fertilizer is a good idea. How to prepare it? We use eggshells that have been boiled in water without any additives. We need to dry the boiled shells and then crush them into tiny particles. We mix the fertilizer prepared in this way with the top layer of soil.
