Almost a decade ago, Koterski decided to face the disease and began treatment. Since then, he has been faithfully abstinent, in which, as he has repeatedly argued, his faith in God helps him. In an interview for Plejada, he even claimed that it was prayer that gave him strength in the most difficult moments of his struggle with addiction and the demons of the past. “I knelt down and asked him to give me the strength to fight the disease and free me from the obsession with drinking and taking drugs,” he recalled, adding that he experienced a miracle then. “I promised him that if he listened to me, I would do everything to never go back to that. And a miracle happened,” he said, emphasizing that if he had not come to his senses in time, he would probably have been dead long ago, because the tragedy was just a step away.

In his latest interview for the “Balans” podcast, Koterski once again recalled the times when he was addicted. Right at the beginning, he stated that he can now call himself lucky, because few people who were in a similar situation managed to overcome it. He admitted with sadness that most of the people he met during therapy were not able to fight for themselves like he managed to. However, he emphasized that it was not their fault. “Alcohol is one of the strongest drugs, it is the only substance that has the same effect as heroin and works on the same receptors,” he explained. “It is the only substance that physically addicts a person, just like opiates,” he added.
He also never hid the fact that he had been at rock bottom several times. Although his loved ones tried to help him at all costs, they did not know how to do it and began to lose hope. “I spent the nights in the stairwells. I was at rock bottom,” he confessed honestly, admitting that it affected not only him, but also his parents, and especially his mother. “My mother admitted to me that at some point she had given up so much that she was just waiting for the phone to ring, when she would hear: ‘Mrs. Iwona, your son is dead’,” he revealed and emphasized that therapy helped him get back on his feet and regain sobriety, which he now cultivates. “My whole life has been turned upside down,” he concluded.
