When choosing seedlings to be planted in the ground, pay attention to whether they have well-developed roots and are healthy. Proper preparation and nourishment of the soil will ensure that they will not be afraid of any frosts.

Leeks are not too capricious, so growing them shouldn’t cause you too many problems. When choosing a location for them, choose a sunny spot. If you find one, prepare the soil. They prefer humus, well-drained soil with a pH of 6-7. If the soil is too heavy, you should take care of drainage and mix it with manure or sand, for example.

Before you start planting, dig the soil thoroughly to a depth of about 25 cm. This will allow the roots to grow freely. Plant the leek in a bed, maintaining a minimum distance of 30 cm between plants. Make sure to weed regularly to prevent unwanted plants from competing for nutrients and water. In the initial growth phase it is important to maintain constant, even soil moisture.. Thanks to this, the stems will thicken at the right pace. Remember, however, not to overwater, as standing water can cause rot. Overwintering plants should be mulched, e.g. with straw or agrotextile.

How to feed leeks? Care and proper fertilizer are a guarantee of a rich harvest

Leeks have high nutritional requirements, so fertilization cannot be neglected. To provide them with the right amount of nitrogen, it is best to use nettle slurry enriched with basalt flour. To prepare the nutrient, you will need:

• 10 liters of water,
• about a kilogram of fresh nettle,
• half a tablespoon of basalt flour.

We throw chopped plants, basalt flour into a plastic bucket and pour water. We cover the container with gauze and leave it in a shady place for 10-14 days. ADVICE! Before using the slurry, dilute it in a ratio of 1:10. For each part of the mixture, add 10 parts of water. During intensive growth, the nutrient can be used once every two weeks. When temperatures start to drop, stop this process.
