I didn’t believe it would be a good movie, I watched it with my breath in. We have a new king of entertainment cinema

There it is – the cinema hit of the summer. On July 18, the movie “Twisters” has its official premiere, a reboot of the cult “Twister” from the 90s. And if you now think: “again cashing in and cashing in on nostalgia” – don’t worry, it’s nothing like that. This movie has everything its predecessor lacked.

“Twister” from 1996 was a real hit. Even if someone hasn’t seen the movie (or watched it as a kid and doesn’t quite remember what it was about), they definitely associate the scene with flying cows. However, aside from a few showy shots, the production didn’t really have much to offer. The creators decided to pull two magpies by the tail and create a spectacular disaster movie, one of the main threads of which will be a relationship from the family of a silly romantic comedy. Spoiler: both paths fell apart and both magpies flew away. In “Twister” the love story is downright idiotic, and Bill Harding, played by Bill Paxton, was the closest he got to a charismatic hero as he stood alongside Helen Hunt. Unfunny jokes, bizarre plot decisions, wasted potential of great supporting characters – these are just a few from the long list of sins of “Twister”. Fortunately, someone sat down and thought: “it’s high time to do it better.”

‘Twisters’ Is a Nearly Perfect Reboot. The Glen Powell Film Hits Theaters

And he did. “Twisters” fixes all the mistakes of its predecessor and is a near-perfect reboot. The film respects its original and winks at its die-hard fans several times. However, it does this not only to win sympathy and bribe with a sentimental introduction to a new story. It is also, and perhaps even primarily, a deliberate lulling of the viewer’s vigilance and giving the image a certain rhythm. Because this time, the creators have skillfully combined goofy humor with spectacular drama to provide us with an unpredictable roller coaster of emotions.

“Twisters” tells the story of Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser who gave up chasing tornadoes in favor of a safe job in front of a computer at a weather base. One day, however, an old friend visits her and asks for a favor. Cooper is convinced to test a new, groundbreaking storm detection system and sets off on another hunt. There, she meets Tyler Owens, who, together with his team, turns chasing tornadoes into entertainment and conquers social media. The two groups begin to compete, but the element is not so easy to control and the heroes soon have to join forces in the fight for their lives.

Glen Powell is becoming the king of entertainment cinema before our eyes.

In Twisters, we have characters of flesh and blood. Every person who appears on screen for more than a moment contributes to key elements of the film. Although the film is not afraid of clichés, it knows when to allow itself for blockbuster banality and when for artistic shots of the surrounding nature. Although the action doesn’t slow down for even a moment throughout the entire two hours, the creators don’t underestimate any thread. An example is the brilliantly constructed theme of Kate’s trauma, which makes us root for her even more and understand every decision, fear and doubt.

And although his screen is dusty with sand, Glen Powell shines. This is his film and his era in entertainment cinema, of which he is becoming the king before our eyes. The star of “Hit Man” balances the features of a charming lover and a nice boy next door, a confident sly guy and a lost boy. He intimidates with charisma and steals attention whenever he appears on the screen. In “Twisters” he proves that appearances can be deceiving and teaches a lesson to both the audience and the newly met Kate.

It’s pleasing that “Twisters” even finds room for social commentary. Many are probably expecting a plot related to climate catastrophe, but the creators completely avoid this motif. Instead, what we get here is a token but solid critique of the capitalist approach to land and property seizures.

“Twisters” is watched while holding your breath

The unusually conducted relationship between Tyler and Kate in the style of a classic screwball comedy also makes a big impression. The feelings that are born in the characters do not lead to a fiery romance from “Hit Man”. The chemistry between the storm chasers is less obvious, but equally strongly felt. The emotions boiling in the characters resonate somewhere in the background, between the lines. They are visible in small gestures and nuances. Thanks to this, the creators spared us shallow kissing scenes against the backdrop of the unfolding catastrophe. And kudos to them for that.

“Twisters” is a must-watch. It’s goofy, but not stupid, spectacular entertainment that leaves us with a lot to reflect on. It’s a film that strikes the perfect balance between borrowing from its predecessor and inventing new ideas, a flashy performance, and an engaging drama where lives are at stake.. Next to Amazon’s “Road House,” this is the best reboot of a hit classic in recent years.

PS. And that symbolic final scene in the cinema. WOW.
