“Dragon Family” Actor Talks About Viewer Hate: “Many Have Contacted Me”

Tom Glynn-Carney plays the unpopular King Aegon II in the HBO series “The Dragon’s Blood”. His character makes many unpopular decisions in the show and has little opportunity to gain sympathy, which often results in hate from viewers. The actor told what happened to him.

King Aegon II is the rival ruler of Westeros to Queen Rhaenyra. The conflict between the characters played by Tom Glynn-Carney and Emma D’Arcy has already fueled half of the second season of “The Dragon’s Bloodline” on the Max platform. The unpleasant Aegon II does not enjoy much respect from viewers, who sometimes willingly pour out their grievances, confusing the series character with the real actor. This was experienced by, among others, Jack Gleeson, who played the hated by viewers King Joffrey in “Game of Thrones”, as well as Fabien Frankel, who played the knight Criston Cole in “”. Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II claims that he was quite lucky in this respect.

“The Dragon’s Kin”. Actor Talks About Viewers’ Hatred

In an interview with Tom Glynn-Carney, he told how viewers of “The Dragon’s Blood” treat him. His king Aegon II is known for being impulsive, not necessarily good decisions, and vacillates between being a good ruler and a sociopathic murderer. Glynn-Carney claims that this is what protects him from the hate he could experience from fans of the series. They very often connect actors with the characters they play, attacking in the real world with hateful comments for the actions of fictional rulers, knights or witches.

In his conversation with Vestal, Glynn-Carney mentioned what Jack Gleeson, who plays the cruel King Joffrey in Game of Thrones, had read about himself – online comments made the young and aspiring actor consider abandoning the profession altogether.

I was very lucky. A lot of people reached out to me, but with kind words about how I portrayed Aegon. It’s a tough job to humanize someone who is so flawed. Fortunately, I haven’t had any negative reactions from fans who can’t tell the difference between the character and the actor. I think we’re at a different stage as a society. When Jack Gleeson played Joffrey, social media wasn’t as popular, which made it harder for people to separate the actor from the character. Today, we’re so technologically advanced, it’s easier to show what happens when the camera isn’t rolling, that the distinction between the character and the actor is more within reach. I think people are getting over it – or at least I hope they are – he said optimistically.

Unfortunately, although Tom Glynn-Carney himself has not experienced hate, his co-star has been much less fortunate. After the first episodes of the second season of “Dragonline”, who plays Sir Criston Cole. He received dozens of comments attacking his character from fans who confused the actor with Cole.
