Film adaptations of comics usually enjoy a good reputation. However, the same cannot be said about the science fiction production directed by SJ Clarkson, which had its world premiere on February 14, 2024. The story about a New York paramedic who, after an accident at work, begins to have flashes of the past, discovering her destiny in the process, was not met with acclaim from fans or even critics.
Critics Unforgiving to ‘Madame Web’ Creators: Emma Roberts Comments on Failure
Although Madame Web featured a galaxy of stars, including the title role, as well as Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahat Rahim and Emma Roberts, it did not have a positive impact on the reception of the production. Even the reviews that appeared after the pre-premiere screenings left no illusions. Critics complained, among other things, about the inconsistency of the script, the divergence of the plots and the scenes full of pathos.

Some time later, she addressed the numerous negative opinions, including in an interview for Variety. The actress admitted that she had a great time on the set and remembers the screening just as well, and blamed the failure on… the pressure of the Internet. “If it weren’t for the culture of the Internet, which makes everything a joke, the reception of the film would be completely different,” she said, adding that this clips the wings of many creators, including hers. “It depresses me in connection with many titles, including those I played in. Nowadays, people will make a joke out of anything,” she said, referring to the situation when the trailer for “Madame Web” was used to create a meme.
Where to watch “Madame Web”? The production is conquering the streaming world
Although “Madame Web” did not impress either viewers or critics and suffered significant financial losses, this did not prevent it from reaching , where, to the surprise of many, it is doing great. Already in mid-June, the production was available for single-view purchase on various VOD services. A few days ago, it also debuted on the Max platform (formerly HBO) and quickly became a sensation among subscribers. Initially, it remained on the podium of the most popular titles on the service for a week, and on July 15-16, 2024, it was in the global Top 3.
