It’s better not to set such a PIN. An expert has revealed the most common combinations. A tasty morsel for thieves

In recent years, card payments have gained popularity and have partially replaced the use of cash. Despite this, some people still make a mistake that exposes them to losing money. All because of a weak PIN. Which one should not be set?

The PIN code is a short series of numbers that only the cardholder should know. It allows you to use the payment card, for example to pay for purchases or services, and to withdraw cash from an ATM. You set it yourself. What combinations are better not to choose so as not to make things easier for a thief?

What is a PIN? It has one purpose

During purchases that you paid for, you were probably forced to enter a PIN, or Personal Identification Number, more than once. It is nothing more than a series of four digits that you yourself have set, and the terminal requires it to confirm that you are the owner of the form. In theory, the exception is situations when you have made purchases for less than PLN 100 and you pay contactless, although it may also happen that entering the code will be necessary. This is an additional protection against unauthorized use.. Unfortunately, it often happens that we treat the PIN as a stepmother, which is why it is really easy to guess. The specialist has indicated the most popular combinations, which are better to avoid.

What should be the PIN for the card? Don’t choose one like that

A good PIN should be complex and non-obvious enough that no unauthorized person can guess it. For this reason, it should definitely not consist of:

  • of four consecutive digits,
  • from the same four digits,
  • from the year you were born. If someone steals your wallet with the card, they can easily check it on other documents.

At the same time, it is important that it is easy enough for you to remember it without having to write it down and leave it in a visible place. It should be absolutely unacceptable to keep a piece of paper with a number near the card, because it has nothing to do with protecting your . Therefore, when choosing a PIN, try to create a combination that will be difficult for an outsider to select on the one hand, and relatively easy for you on the other.

What PIN should not be set? The specialist indicated specific combinations

Nick Berry is a specialist and data analyst from Meta. According to the wp.pl portal, based on his own observations and research, he identified the four-digit PIN combinations he encountered most often. What did they look like?

  • 1234,
  • 1111,
  • 0000,
  • 1212,
  • 7777,
  • 2000,
  • 4444,
  • 2222,
  • 696,
  • 2580.

If you also found your PIN on the list above, you better change it. Such sequences of numbers are extremely popular and therefore easy to crack. Remember to block your card at the bank immediately if you lose it or otherwise lose it. This will minimize the chance that someone will use it unauthorised. It is also worth installing a banking app and enabling two-factor authentication in it, and each larger transaction (except contactless) will require additional confirmation from you.
