In May, 25-year-old Daniel flew to Tunisia on an all-inclusive package. There, he stayed at the Hammett Hotel on the country’s eastern coast. As reported by the “Uwaga” program, the vacation turned into a nightmare when the Pole left the resort and decided to explore Tunis on his own. When he was taking pictures of buildings in one of the streets, the police stopped him. “They told me not to worry about anything, that they just wanted to ask a few questions and send me off to continue sightseeing,” he reported on the program. However, that did not happen.
Photo in uniform and tattoo
Tunisia is in a state of emergency. After the terrorist attack in the resort of Sousse nine years ago, the authorities have been very strict about observing security rules. It is forbidden to take pictures of military and government buildings, and it is forbidden to take pictures of police officers, soldiers or security personnel. It turned out that a secret meeting was taking place in the building that the tourist from Poland was photographing. When the police were looking through the 25-year-old’s phone at the police station, they came across photos of him in uniform. This raised suspicions.
– There were suspicions that caused a reaction of incomprehension. There was a secret meeting inside this hotel. And they took his phone, checked it and saw a lot of photos in uniform with weapons. Certain associations immediately appeared – explained Abdul Khedimi, who worked on Daniel’s case at the request of the Tunisian court. Additionally, the tattoo on the Pole’s forearm worked to his disadvantage: a gun and the words “Karma”.
“I sat with murderers, killers”
Initially, the 25-year-old was held in a Tunisian detention center for two weeks. “At that time, it was about 40 degrees in the shade. These were extreme conditions. No access to water, no food. I lost 13 kilograms. It was a struggle with myself to cope with the whole situation mentally,” he recalled. Then the court decided to extend his detention for another 10 days. “I ended up in a place that was even more guarded, more restrictive. I was sitting with murderers, assassins, smugglers and terrorists. At night, we were left to our own devices, without supervision. There were concerns, but I tried not to think about it,” he said.
The nightmare lasted 45 days. Only when he presented documents proving that he was a student in Poland and could not take the exams was he released. Although he is now safe, this traumatic experience changed him forever.
