Vitoria-Gasteiz takes over jazz
The 47th edition of the Vitoria Jazz Festival will raise the curtain on Monday, July 15, and will lower it on Sunday, the 21st. During that time, the festival will offer 50 concerts and bid farewell for a while, in view of its extensive remodelling, to the Teatro Principal.
In addition, the main stage of Mendizorroza will be back on Sunday with the new hip-hop performance by Argentine rapper Trueno, who is aiming to attract a younger audience.
Mendizorroza will open on Wednesday 17 July with the double bass of Vitorian Pablo Martín Caminero, who will debut on stage with the NDR Bigband; three-time Grammy winner Terri Lyne Carrington will take over on drums to present her latest multidisciplinary project, “New Standards Vol. 1”.
On Thursday, Joel Ross will present his fourth album, ‘Nublues’, in which he will present a more modern jazz style before the virtuoso Cécile McLorin Salvan, accompanied by pianist Sullivan Fortner, will present her latest album, ‘Mélusine’, full of nuances, ballads and hints of swing.
On Friday 19 July, the Galician trio Sumrrá will take to the stage with El Niño de Elche, and Michel Camilo and Tomatito will close the day with their new work ‘Spain forever again’.
The 20th will be the most Cuban day with the violinist Yilian Cañizares in first place and the sound of Chucho Valdés afterwards, with Valdés bringing together in Vitoria some of the members of his group Irakere, which revolutionized Afro-Cuban music by fusing it with jazz, rock, classical music and popular Cuban rhythms.
The last day is aimed at a younger audience with the appearance of Trueno.
