During the filming of the movie “Rust” in 2021, he accidentally shot the camerawoman Halyna Hutchins. The accident ended in tragedy. The woman died as a result of her injuries, and investigators have been trying to determine for three years why such a huge oversight on the set. On July 9, the trial of the actor began, who is accused of involuntary manslaughter, for which he faces 1.5 years in prison.
Alec Baldwin’s Trial Continues as New Evidence Presented in Case
On the second day of the trial, previously undisclosed evidence in the case was discussed in the courtroom. It concerns the biggest mystery related to the tragedy: the source of the live ammunition and how it ended up on the film set.
Jurors in Santa Fe, where the actor is on trial, heard a new theory about the so-called “Good Samaritan.” Alex Spiro, Baldwin’s defense attorney, said a person went to the local sheriff’s office and turned over ammunition that came from the same source as the bullet that killed Hutchins.
Who is the “Good Samaritan” from the Baldwin trial?
It is worth recalling here that prosecutor Kari Morrissey stubbornly maintained that the culprit of the presence of real ammunition on the set of “Rust” was Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for the gun in the film. The woman was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison in April 2024.
Baldwin’s defense attorney questioned Marissa Poppell, a forensic scientist, during the trial. She revealed that the “good Samaritan” who provided new evidence in the case was retired Arizona police officer Troy Teske, a friend of Gutierrez’s father. Poppell also testified that investigators did not turn over the new evidence to the FBI, so it could not be used in a potential appeal.
Poppell’s testimony will not affect Alec Baldwin’s situation, however. The actor was never suspected of bringing live ammunition onto the set. The star’s trial is about violating a “cardinal rule” regarding the safety of using firearms on set, prosecutor Erlinda Ocampo Johnson said in her opening statement.
