Jerzy Stuhr suffered a stroke in 2020. Nine years earlier, he had been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. Although doctors initially did not predict improvement, he managed to return to health and to work. In 2023, the cancer returned. – Recurrence is a common case in cancer. But I persevered – some time later in an interview with “Newsweek”. He died on July 9, 2024. He was 77 years old.

Jerzy Stuhr and Barbara Kóska met in kindergarten, although their relationship did not start out well. They did not keep in touch as children, but Barbara recalled a story from their kindergarten days in her memoirs. It turned out that as five-year-olds they danced the Krakowiak together, but Jerzy was not very good at it.

– in “Basia. Szczęśliwą się było”. Contact was lost for years. They met again in Krakow, where Stuhr had left to initially study Polish at the Jagiellonian University. They met by chance on the steps of the Higher School of Music and the PWST.

They were united by their passions and common origins, they went to the theatre and concerts together, but they didn’t talk about love. – Jurek is not an easy type. He doesn’t know how to talk about his emotions – Barbara Stuhr told “Twój Styl”. He didn’t have to say it, Barbara knew. In the spring of 1968 Stuhr proposed. They got married three years later, “a bit because of my parents and their fears (…), and a bit for financial reasons”. The civil wedding took place in October, the church wedding and the wedding reception on Christmas Day in 1971. A year later Jerzy graduated from theatre school. Barbara graduated from music school and became a violinist.

– I didn’t think for a long time about where we would live, what we would live on and how. I came from a very modest home, it seemed to me that I would always manage. Jurek and I were poor, we ate one student dinner together, but we felt free – admitted Barbara. Maciej was born in 1975, Marianna in 1982.

It wasn’t ideal, because there was no shortage of problems related to the actor’s developing career. Despite this, they were happy for 53 years. – We never lived in conflict, we don’t have quiet days. If there was a problem, we solved it. My way was to write letters – said Barbara Stuhr in an interview. She admitted that even when he returned home, he preferred solitude to sitting in her company. – Love is most associated with a huge longing for , for children. It was a natural state for me. I have the feeling that my profession took something from my domestic happiness. But I wouldn’t change it. My happiness was that my wife understood this – Stuhr in one of the interviews.
