There’s a new number one Netflix in Poland. Reviews: “Reheated cutlet”, “disappointing”

Axel Foley returns in the fourth installment of “Beverly Hills Cop” and conquers Polish Netflix. The new installment of the cult action comedy from the 80s has hit streaming and divided critics.

On July 3, the sequel to the cult action series with Eddie Murphy appeared on the screen. The actor returned to the role of Detective Axel Foley thanks to the fourth part of “Beverly Hills Cop”. “Detective Axel Foley is once again patrolling the streets of Beverly Hills. Together with his daughter (Taylour Paige), whose life is in danger, his new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his old buddies, Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), he sets out to thwart a nefarious plot – and heat things up a lot in the process,” we read in the description of the production.

“Beverly Hills Cop” is back and conquering Netflix

In just a few days, the film conquered Polish Netflix. Currently, the new “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” is number one among the most watched productions of the platform in our country. Second place is occupied by “A Family Matter” with Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman, and the podium is closed by “Redeeming Love”.

The first film in the series debuted in 1984 and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The action comedy is still beloved by fans around the world, and on Rotten Tomatoes it received a freshness rating of 83 percent from critics. The second installment of the detective’s adventures received much weaker ratings (48 percent), and the third turned out to be a real dud in this respect (11 percent from reviewers and 35 percent from viewers).

“Everything works, but there’s no sparkle.” ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Reviewers Divided

Netflix’s “Axel F” did quite well compared to its predecessors. Reviewers rated the film 67 percent on a freshness scale, while viewers rated it 80. However, there is no shortage of bitter words online about Mark Molloy’s latest film. “The rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia won’t cover up the boring plot and dull humor,” writes Łukasz Muszyński from the Filmweb portal about the film. “Nostalgia, marked cards, but without the magic of a ‘Top Gun’ or ‘Creed’ sequel. Everything is fine, but without the sparkle,” writes Łukasz Adamski.

Among foreign critics, however, the opinions seem to be harsher. “It’s just a rehashed casserole,” writes Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com. “Everything here is so awkward that there’s nothing left to squeeze out of this story,” he adds. The prevailing opinion in reviews is that the production is bland, lacking in panache and proper tension building.

“This form seems old and worn out today,” notes Diego Batlle of Otroscines.com. Todd Jorgenson of dentonrc.com emphasizes that fans of the series will certainly appreciate the film, but they won’t get anything new from it. Javier Ocana of El Pais, in turn, accuses the new Netflix production of an outdated approach to creating action films, and Frank Swietek of oneguysopinion.com agrees with his opinion.
