The family of the murdered student laments that, years after the murder, the name of Amanda Knox, who was initially convicted of Kercher’s murder and then acquitted, has started to appear more often in the public sphere. Although the brutal murder shocked the entire world at the time, today Meredith’s loved ones believe that her death has been forgotten. After the verdict in the case of Amanda Knox, the sister of the murdered woman confessed:
Mer has been forgotten in all of this. The pictures in the media don’t really show her. There’s not much said about what really happened. That’s why it’s very hard to keep her memory alive.
Student Stabbed 40 Times, Roommate Charged with Murder
21-year-old Meredith Kercher flew to Italy for a student exchange. The aforementioned sister of the victim, Stephanie Kercher, spoke in a BBC documentary about the crime from years ago. The woman recalled that her sister couldn’t wait to leave. She really wanted to learn the Italian culture, learn the language and meet new people. – We talked on the couch and hugged each other goodbye. I remember how she suddenly burst into tears and said she would be sad (…). I was quite surprised and thought: “Don’t make me sad. I’ll die of longing, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time,” Stephanie said in the documentary.
Meredith Kercher, upon arriving in Perugia, moved in with her fellow countrywoman, Amanda Knox. The latter quickly fell in love with an Italian, Rafaello Sollecito. It was they who were supposed to find Meredith dead on November 1, 2007. The 21-year-old student died from strangulation and 40 stab wounds. “Everything Meredith must have felt that night. Everything she went through. The fear, the terror, and not knowing why… She didn’t deserve that. Nobody deserves that,” Meredith’s sister said.
Knox and Sollecito were immediately among the suspects. Journalists published new reports, during which the suffering of the family and the murdered woman herself was no longer in the foreground. The trial, on the other hand, revealed a number of incompetences of the services, including the failure to secure evidence at the crime scene.
“Amanda wanted to make Meredith pay her”
Knox’s loved ones were convinced of her innocence. As we can learn from the BBC documentary, prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, who led a private investigation into the case, is still convinced that it was Knox who murdered her roommate. He mentioned an “erotic game” during which the 21-year-old was supposed to die. Amanda Marie Knox spent a total of 4 years in an Italian prison, convicted of the murder of Kercher in 2007. In 2015, she was definitively acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation. In 2024, an Italian court of appeal upheld her conviction for falsely accusing another person. The acquittal in the murder case was a tragedy for the Kercher family. Her loved ones are still convinced of Knox’s guilt and for a long time could not come to terms with the court’s decision.
Meredith’s parents died 13 years later, just 4 months apart. The devastated Kercher siblings released a moving statement at the time, saying that their “only consolation” was the thought that their parents were reunited with Meredith and that they “no longer have to live with the grief that consumed them.” Ultimately, Rudy Guede was charged with Meredith Kercher’s murder. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
