Dowbor ran a “matching agency” on TVP. The participants were paired by a supercomputer. Remember?

For many years now, TV dating shows have enjoyed huge popularity among viewers. Few people know, however, that one of the first formats of this type in Poland was broadcast in the mid-1980s. What was it about? Some may be surprised.

Have you ever wondered how the way people matched has changed since the dawn of time? It is no secret that several centuries ago, marriages arranged by families were the most popular. Later, matchmakers came into the picture, and their activity laid the foundations for dating agencies. In turn, in the era of the Internet, dating portals have become popular, through which you can meet a candidate who meets your preferences in the blink of an eye. Television shows such as “Love Island. Wyspa miłości” or , are also equally popular. However, few people know that this is not a completely new idea, because the first format of this type was created almost 40 years ago.

A marriage agency on TVP? The Dowbor program was once a real hit on the station

Some of you may remember how in 1985 “Studio Lato” appeared with the host. It was within this program that the “Television Matrimonial Agency” was created, with the aim of matching participants into couples. People interested in taking part sent their applications, which included data such as age, education, zodiac sign, interests and place of origin.

It was also important to provide honest answers to the questions asked in the form, related to hobbies, interests, or characteristics of an ideal partner. Then, they were analyzed by a microcomputer, which selected men and women who had the most common aspects and thus the greatest chance of creating a successful and, above all, happy relationship.

What was the phenomenon of the “Television Matrimonial Agency”? It became a gateway to Dowbor’s career

The participants of the “Television Matrimonial Agency” did not have to appear in the studio for the recordings. The results of the system’s pairing appeared in episodes broadcast every Friday. At that time, the participants’ data and the percentage value of their similarities appeared on the screen. After the program ended, the people selected in it received a special letter with contact details for people with whom, according to the microcomputer, they could arrange a meeting. For those times, the idea was innovative and caused a huge sensation, especially since it was implemented using advanced technology, which increased the prestige of the entire undertaking and was considered extremely reliable. Was it really so? One could argue with that.

It is worth mentioning that “Telewizyjne Biuro Matrymonialne” was one of the first formats she hosted, becoming a kind of gateway to her career. At the time, she was only 26 years old and was just taking her first steps in the industry. The program allowed her to appear in the minds of viewers, and its incredible popularity translated into interest in her person. In the following years, she continued this professional path, hosting, among others, “Pytanie na śniadanie” or on Polsat. If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
