A million viewers in a month! Another hit in Polish cinemas. It has already broken the record. Are they coming for more?

It was first transferred from comics to the screen in the late 80s and immediately won the hearts of viewers. Today, “Garfield” is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and the adventures of the iconic cat still arouse interest. Proof of this is the latest film in the series, which attracted over a million viewers to Polish cinemas in a month since its premiere.

Garfield, an orange cat who loves lasagna and sweet laziness, was created for the comic book by Jim Davis and debuted in the Pendleton Times-Post newspaper in early 1976. Just 2 years later, the series was printed in 41 magazines around the world. On the wave of its popularity in the late 80s, it was followed by the television series Garfield and Friends, which made an equally big sensation, and not only among the youngest viewers.

From Comic Book to Record-Breaking Movie Series: Garfield Has Been Made into a Few Hits

The real breakthrough came when the first film, about the adventures of Garfield and his companions, debuted in cinemas in 2004. Its popularity did not wane for a long time, so in the following years four equally successful sequels were created, the last of which, “Garfield: Cats on the Hill”, premiered 5 years after the release of the original.

Although the adventures of the iconic animal have not been continued since then, at least not on the big screen, the franchise has been growing steadily, gaining new fans. Finally, the decision was made to reactivate the series and create another part of the film. This, as it quickly turned out, was a bullseye.

The new “Garfield” broke the record. It was watched by over a million Polish viewers in a month

When a few months ago, information about a new installment of the story about the orange cat appeared, his fans went crazy with joy. In May 2024, the next film in the series was released, directed by Mark Dindal, in which Garfield was voiced by an actor known from the science fiction film “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy 2”. Due to the fact that the last production debuted 15 years earlier, the creators launched a huge marketing campaign, which was carried out on their behalf by United International Pictures.

The promotional effort was not wasted, because in just one month since its premiere in Polish cinemas, “Garfield” broke the record, selling over a million tickets for screenings. Although the result is impressive, some believe it did not live up to expectations, because it has the potential to achieve more.

A great success, although it seemed that the film had the potential to do much better, especially considering the huge marketing of UIP

– said one of the users of the X portal. The chances of this happening are still quite high, however, because the production is still in the repertoire of most cinemas in the country, so the final box office result may still change. If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
