When Wilfredo Leon was 14, he made his debut in the Cuban national team. Three years later, he was already the captain. In 2015, he received Polish citizenship, and in July 2019, he started playing in the Polish national volleyball team. At the beginning of his career, he did not give many interviews. You had to try really hard to talk to him. Małgorzata Gronkowska, a journalist from Poland, took up this challenge.
They met online. Wilfredo Leon fell in love at first sight
– We managed to reach Wilfredo through other Cuban national volleyball players, get his contact details and that’s how we started talking – Małgosia told TVP Sport. At first, she kept in touch with Leon only via the Internet. The first meeting took place in 2011 in Gdańsk. The World League final tournament was taking place there. The volleyball player was nervous about talking to the journalist face to face. He wondered what it would look like and whether the meeting would take place in a pleasant atmosphere. When he saw her, he was immediately charmed. – A wonderful moment. A big hug, kisses right away – he recalled. Professional matters faded into the background. – We started talking more about private matters and this relationship went in a slightly different direction than I expected at first – said Gronkowska.
He moved to Poland for her. Leon and Gronkowska have three children
After three years of long distance, Wilfredo decided to move. On January 28, 2014, he came to Poland permanently. Małgosia was waiting for him at the Warsaw airport. Living together verified everything. – We had to learn about each other. At the beginning, there were definitely more misunderstandings related to cultural habits, the differences that existed between us – confessed the journalist. However, they managed to overcome all obstacles and in June 2016 they got married.
11 months later, the couple’s daughter, Natalia, was born. In 2019, their son, Christian, was born, and in June 2023, their second daughter, Selena. Although Leon’s trips can be problematic, they have their advantages. – You definitely can’t get bored with each other. When your husband is away, he’s at training camps, you miss him more.
