Towne reportedly helped write the screenplay for Bonnie and Clyde and the production of The Godfather, although he is not listed in the credits. Coppola thanked him at the 1973 Oscars, when he received the award for best screenplay for the adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel. In Poland, Towne gained particular popularity as the author of the screenplay for Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. The artist was awarded an Oscar for the text.
