The author of the best-selling Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, is once again at the center of controversy. This time the reason is her criticism of David Tennant, an actor known for his role in “Harry Potter” and “Doctor Who”. The dispute concerns Tennant’s statements.

Tennant, while receiving an award at the British LGBT Awards, he spoke critically about Kemi Badenochthe British Minister for Women and Equalities, which sparked a fierce controversy on social media.

What did Tennant say?

David Tennant is a well-known advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. At the British LGBT Awards, David Tennant expressed his disappointment that receives an award for “obvious facts” regarding equality. In his speech he said: “Everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life as long as they do not harm others. It’s human decency.”

Then, during the British LGBT Awards, the actor expressed his opinion about British politician Kemi Badenoch, who announced actions aimed at excluding transgender women from spaces intended for women. Tennant said people with such views “should shut up.” During the same event, referring to critics of the transgender community, he stated: “They’re a bunch of whiny little bastards who are on the wrong side of history, but soon they’ll all be gone.”

Rowling’s harsh reaction

JK Rowling did not remain indifferent to these words. She commented on Tennant’s words on her Twitter profile:

This man is talking about rape victims who only want care from women, about nurses who are suing their employers because they make them change their clothes in the presence of male co-workers, about girls and women who lose opportunities in sports, about men and women who are incarcerated along with sex offenders

In addition, Rowling referred to Tennant as a member “Gender Taliban” (transl. gender Taliban)claiming that he is acting in accordance with political correctness.

Rowling’s conflict with “Harry Potter” actors

JK Rowling has faced criticism for years for her views on transgender people. In 2018, she sparked controversy by mocking the phrase “menstruating people”. She also defended an official who said that transwomen are men, even after medical gender reassignment. Conflict between JK Rowling and part of the acting community associated with “Harry Potter”. Many actors, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, have publicly opposed the writer’s views on transgender people. Once, in response to Rowling’s words, Radcliffe issued a statement in which he emphasized that “Trans women are women.”

Daniel Radcliffe admitted to The Atlantic earlier this year that has not had direct contact with Rowling since June 2020when the writer published controversial tweets that many deemed transphobic.
