Why do windows fog up in winter? This is due to the temperature difference
If you think that the water that condenses in your apartment comes from outside, you are wrong. In winter, the windows evaporate as moisture from the apartment accumulates on them. This is the moment of the so-called when the dew point is exceeded, this is when the water on the shafts begins to condense. The higher the temperature in our apartment or house – the greater the risk of steaming windows.
Can steaming windows in my home cause mold or other troubles?
In the most extreme cases, ice may appear on the windows. This is not so much a dangerous phenomenon as it is embarrassing. The amount of water vapor can also affect the permanent dampness of the room. Mold appears very rarely for this reason, but if so, it can pose a health risk.
Here’s how to adjust your windows for winter. A simple trick worth knowing
Adjusting the window for the winter significantly contributes to the elimination of the problem of fogged-up windows. It consists in sealing the windows, thanks to which more heat will be retained in the room, it will not be necessary to dismantle the radiators, and the windows will not evaporate too much. There are special pins in PVC windows. They are downstairs, by the window. You should turn them 90 degrees from the previous arrangement. You have to be careful, because they are quite spaced apart and have an irregular shape, which makes it sometimes difficult to distinguish them. Depending on their position, they press the seal on the window arm more or less. Other ways to get rid of steam include:
- Examine the air humidity in the house – the recommended air humidity in the house is approx. 40 – 50%.
- Checking the operation of ventilation – if the ventilation in the room is not working, be sure to have repairs done. If gravity ventilation is not sufficient, replace it with mechanical ventilation.
- Windows with micro ventilation – fittings with this function ensure a constant supply of fresh air and remove excess moisture from the room.
- Diffusers – they can be mounted in windows or walls. They bring fresh air into rooms even with tightly closed windows.
- Airing the apartment – remember that also in autumn and winter it is necessary to ventilate all rooms regularly and intensively. All you have to do is open the windows for several minutes twice a day.
- Dehumidifier – if moisture has become a permanent part of your home, consider buying an air dehumidifier. Such a device can extract even several liters of water from the air within a few hours.
