At the beginning of November 2023, the Warsaw Prószyński Media Publishing House published the reportage “Christianity. Amoral Religion” by Artur Nowak and Ireneusz Ziemiński. The authors presented faith from a completely different perspective. This did not please some Catholic circles, especially members of the Piotr Skarga Institute Foundation, who decided to boycott its publication. Although the topic went quiet for some time, it has now resurfaced.
A strike in front of the headquarters of a Polish publishing house. Reason? “Christianity. An Amoral Religion”
A few days ago, protests preceded by prayer took place in front of the publishing house’s headquarters under the slogan “Catholic Poland, not secular” against “blasphemous terror in the mainstream of public debate”. Monika Szymborska commented on the matter in an interview with Onet. She emphasized that they took place in a peaceful atmosphere. However, a discussion with members of the Catholic group is not possible because, as she claims, they are not familiar with the content they are boycotting. – The protesters do not prove that they have read it, they only use unfair simplifications – assessed the press spokeswoman of the publishing house.
However, this is not the only manifestation of dissatisfaction among the organization’s members. So far, President Maciej Makowski has received as many as 24,458 letters expressing support for the protests and asking to stop further publications. – This is an extremely motivating result, which shows that Poles are not indifferent to the issue of the quality of publications and editorial responsibility – said the strike organizers, who accused the management of reluctance and fear of direct confrontation. – It is difficult for me to comment on the boasts about the scale of this protest. As a publishing house, we are disappointed that a Catholic organization wants to influence the freedom of the literary market – said the spokeswoman. She added that the content of all these letters was identical and they lacked substantive argumentation.
“Christianity. An amoral religion.” The author of the book eloquently comments on the protests
The case quickly received wide coverage in the media and soon one of the co-authors, Artur Nowak, who specializes in abuses of the Catholic Church, also commented on it. In his statement, he emphasized that out of nearly 25,000 people protesting, only a few were tempted to read it “from cover to cover”, the rest have no idea what its content is about and are guided only by what they were told. – But the Church cherishes such people: thoughtless and obedient members of the herd who do not want to confront the truth about their religion, which they de facto do not know – he stated bluntly.
At the same time, he emphasized that this whole situation is a manifestation and confirmation of what he mentions so extensively in the reportage. – The Church’s greatest enemy is freedom and it will always fight it with old, proven strategies: fear of hell, guilt and the command of obedience – he concluded. Professor Tadeusz Bartoś, a philosopher, theologian and former Dominican, has a similar opinion, noting that although openly critical publications had appeared on the market before, none of them evoked such emotions as “Amoral Religion”. For this reason, the causes of the protests are seen in aspects other than those publicly mentioned by the strike members. If you’d like, please vote in our poll below.
