The European Commission has placed Poland and 6 other EU countries under the excessive deficit procedure in the public space due to weak budget data for 2023. What does this mean? In short, selected countries will have to propose solutions to reduce their deficits. In addition to Poland, this group also includes: France, Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary and Malta.
Although the final decision of the EU Council to launch the procedure will not be made until July, countries can start preparing new solutions today. Due to the above, there has been speculation that this may mean budget cuts in social benefits, such as the 13th and 14th pensions. Hence, there are numerous questions about whether they will be limited or completely eliminated.
Dziemianowicz-Bąk on 13th pensions: “Nothing that is given will be taken away”
Questions about the alleged abolition of benefits have been emerging since the change of government. Less than a week ago, the Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk, spoke on this matter. In an interview in the “Graffiti” program on Polsat News, she decided to put an end to all speculations and assured that there would be no liquidation of the 13th pension. – There are no such plans, I can assure you – she assured. She also added that the previous government did not leave the situation easy, and the EC’s decision constitutes a challenge for the new government and the Ministry of Finance. However, she argued that the talks with the head of the ministry were successful.

As the Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy, I assure you – no one has so far come to me with any claim that we should cut, trim, take away, limit anything. There was a declaration that nothing given will be taken away
– announced the head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy at Polsat. – Nothing like this is on the table, no one is talking about it. (…) The left believes that we cannot tighten our belts on the skinniest bellies. You cannot start any cuts, any restrictions on the basic needs of Polish women and men – she assured on Polsat News.
Let us recall that the excessive deficit procedure is launched on the basis of the EC’s recommendation. This happens if in a given EU country the public finance sector deficit exceeds 3 percent of GDP or the debt is higher than 60 percent.
