Few people know that its tradition dates back to 1910. It was then that Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of Civil War veteran William Smart, started it in the United States. However, it was officially established only by President Richard Milhous Nixon in 1972. Then this custom was taken over by, among others, Germany, Great Britain, France and Turkey, while in Poland it had already been known for about 7 years, depending on the sources.
