Why are there baggage limits on airplanes? Not everyone realizes that they are of great importance for our safety, but it’s not just about that. Find out what can happen if you exceed them and how to prepare your luggage before you go to the airport.

When traveling by plane, many people are stressed about packing their suitcases. The problem may be whether we will be able to stay within the weight limit and whether the suitcase will not have inappropriate dimensions. Each airline has its own limits that must be adhered to. Why do they apply and what happens if we exceed them?

Everything for our safety, but not only that. Do you know why there are baggage limits on airplanes?

Limits on an airplane are very important, although sometimes we may think that they should not be so restrictive. The first aspect is ensuring the appropriate balance and weight of the aircraft, which should not be exceeded due to the need to maintain the stability of the machine in the air.

In addition, it is worth knowing that the more luggage there is on the plane, the more fuel it can burn. On longer flights, you may need to land to refuel. If there is a lot of luggage on the plane, putting it in before departure and taking it out after departure may take a lot of time, which translates into additional costs for the airlines and the plane taking up the lanes for a longer time. But what happens if our suitcase at the airport turns out to be too big or its dimensions do not match?

What if the suitcase is too big? This is how airport employees will react when the weight and dimension limits are exceeded

The most common practice is for employees to charge an additional fee when a suitcase’s weight or size limit is exceeded. In the case of a hand luggage, you may have to check it in as checked baggage, so you will not be able to have it with you throughout the flight. In extreme cases, you may also be refused to transport your suitcase, which will generate additional problems. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.

WARNING! The consequences of baggage being too large or not the right dimensions depend on the specific airline. For this reason, it is worth checking the policy of a given carrier on the website, obtaining information at the hotline, or asking employees at the airport. Before you go to the airport, measure and weigh your suitcases so that you don’t get an unpleasant surprise when you get there.
